CEO Stephen Smith coupled his experience in personal training and gym management with an entrepreneurial drive. He opened a tanning salon, Electric Beach, in the Uptown district of New Orleans, Louisiana in April of 1995, with the plan to bring professionalism and franchising to the indoor tanning industry.
The salon was a success, and Smith was prepared to expand. However, the name “Electric Beach” wasn’t quite right. It didn’t encompass what the company stood for, the company had worked to create an experience that was similar to a beach vacation, only with an edge. It was exciting to tan at the salon – kind of ‘other worldly’.
From that sentiment, the first Planet Beach Franchised location opened in Georgia in 1996. Since that time, Planet Beach has grown substantially with hundreds of franchised locations in the United States, Canada and Australia. Objective
By the end of 2008, Planet Beach will strive to have open or under development at least 1000 locations, including many locations in other countries through our International Expansion Program. Planet Beach offers a monthly classroom-training program as a required affiliate to our online curriculum. Planet Beach University in New Orleans is a three-day series of classes on industry guidelines, salon operations and product knowledge. Demographics are provided for your territory, indicating whether or not the territory has a viable customer base in order to produce a profitable salon. Planet Beach Franchising Corporation evaluates all potential development locations available in your area. Rental rates, visibility, tenant mix, age of the shopping center, landlord services, security, parking and several other factors are investigated. Lease proposals are generated then presented to the landlord or shopping center.
Under normal circumstances, Planet Beach Franchising Corporation recommends one to three sites in your area along with an evaluation of the positive and negative aspects of each site.

Planet Beach has partnered with Keating Magee and Louis Giacona Advertising, two prominent advertising agencies, to produce an effective Marketing campaign for 2005. Highlighting "the tan is the hero," this campaign has unveiled a unique new brand identity that will clearly differentiate Planet Beach from our competition! The 2005 campaign consists of several NEW advertising pieces, including guest passes, direct mail, door hangers, various print ads, billboard, radio, and television media to help you market in your area.
