It all began from the Kitchen Table...
The first Young Rembrandts Kids Art Franchise classes started in the spring of 1988 as a collection of elementary age children around Bette Fetter's kitchen table. Bette funneled her art degree from Northern Illinois University, her proficiency in drawing, watercolor, photography, textiles, weaving, graphic arts, and design, with her background in child development and knowledge of how children learn. The result was distilled into a system for teaching children how to draw.
The Expansion...
As Bette's successful techniques reached a broader audience, the support staff grew with the teaching staff. More classes, and more staff meant a move to office space, along with studio space for family classes. When Bette's husband Bill left the world of corporate sales to join Young Rembrandts, the company expanded rapidly in many new directions: preschools, Montessori schools, day care centers, park districts, public and private elementary schools.
The response was overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Organizations realized that by outsourcing their art programs to Young Rembrandts, they were free of hiring, training, curriculum, and supply issues. School districts, suffering fine arts budget cuts, afforded unhappy parents opportunities for their children by hosting Young Rembrandts' classes after school. Soon even schools whose art staff had not been reduced found Young Rembrandts as an ideal enrichment program. In addition, park districts clamored for Young Rembrandts' themed summer camp curriculum, which catered to children of various ages and interests. A Profitable Business and Rewarding Career...
