This was what David Ferguson’s working life had become and although he loved his job, he realised he needed to make some drastic changes to achieve that all important enhanced quality of life. Like so many people, David had day-dreamed about running his own business but had yet to have that “eureka” moment when he came up with a killer idea destined to cement his family’s future fortune. Still keen to go it alone, David began to research the whole franchising approach to business and it quickly became apparent that the reduced risks and high success rates associated with franchising represented a far more viable strategy.

David's Skills & Aspirations...

Having decided upon the franchise route it was time to identify the right franchise to suit David’s blend of skills and aspirations. Browsing through the British Franchise Association’s web site, the Scenic Blue proposition immediately stood out as a business that ticked all the boxes. David was clear that he wanted to build a business, not buy a job; he wanted a business that was business to consumer based; he didn’t want to run a retail outlet and he wanted something that was project based with an emphasis on the high quality nature of the end product.

Solution = Scenic Blue...

David joined the Scenic Blue network in October 2003 and wisely used the winter months to get the business systems in place, work out his notice with his previous employer and complete the prerequisite training. With the first project in the bag in February 2004, April saw David and his team of two embark upon their first landscaping assignment.

Since taking on the Scenic Blue Warrington franchise, David’s working life has been transformed and he thrives on the variety his new role offers. From the day to day running of the business, meeting clients, preparing quotes, undertaking site visits and the quite literal “digging in” with the team, no two days are the same and the experience is a million miles away from his previous management position within the telecoms industry.

Award Winning...

In under three years, David’s has doubled his work force, grown the business to reap a substantial 6 figure turnover and most recently, has won two major accolades within the extensive Scenic Blue network: Franchisee of the Year 2006 and Technical Excellence Award 2006. Whilst the financial performance of the business and the receipt of industry accolades are pleasing, at the heart of David’s decision to take the plunge was the desire to take back control of his life and this is clearly where the greatest measure of his satisfaction lies.

David says...

“I get a great buzz out of seeing the culmination of a project and witnessing the effort that goes into the design and build of a perfect garden. I love the sheer variety of projects and receiving positive feedback from clients. But having the ability to plan my week to my own schedule is also really important to me – and my family”.
