Career Ladder
Name: William Megaughin Age: 44 Job Title: Franchise Owner Number of years in job: 1 Year Number of years in the beauty industry: 1 Year Previous jobs: ‘Set Operator’ in Gallahers cigarette company
Did you ever work outside the beauty industry? I worked all my life in Gallahers.
What attracted you to beauty? My step daughter informed me of the franchise opportunities with New York City nails. When I meet with them I realised how much potential there was.
What was your first job in the industry? Franchise owner of the 2 station nail bar in Fairhill Shopping Centre, Ballymena.
How did you progress to your current job? The 2 station nail bar proved to be so successful, that when the location became available for a salon, I couldn’t afford NOT to take the opportunity. I must also point out that none of this would have been possible without the daily mentoring, advice and support of New York City nails team.
Describe a typical day in your job. There really is no such thing – that’s the ‘beauty’ of the job! But as a rule I would;
Meet with the managers (the 2 station nail bar & salon) every morning
I would then spend time in the office – checking emails, sales figures and general administration
Then I would probably meet with New York City nails, suppliers, clients and potential clients (promoting the business) – looking at any potential cross promotion / PR opportunities.
Back to the office to analyse the sales figures which are rang through by the managers at the end of every day
What are the high points of the job? The ‘feel good’ factor – seeing and hearing customer satisfaction. Developing teams and in particular managers; developing the NYCN brand and proving to myself that it can be done and that I can be successful.
And the low points? Trying to please ALL the people ALL the time – it can be a struggle, but we’ll get there! The high points far out weigh the low points!
What’s your ultimate career ambition? To drive both franchises and make them even more successful; then eventually look to expand and open further New York City nails franchises in other locations in N.Ireland – the opportunities are there!
Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to get into a position like your’s?
Yes – go for it! Have the courage and belief that you can do it, just look at me! I had absolutely no experience within this industry or in business a year ago and now I have 2 successful franchises!
Try not to listen to the doubters and pessimists who say that it can’t be done – if we listened to them there would never be any entreprenueurship.
Take advice, speak to New York City nails; they were (and are) fantastic with me in terms of advice and support. They give you the facts and the truth and ‘hold your hand’ through every step of the business.
Realise that to be successful, you have to make sacrifices and work hard.
The potential is huge in a market that is growing every year and the wonderful thing about being a New York City nails franchise, is that you are never alone!
