National welcome for ‘wills time-bomb’ action call Dire warnings by the National Consumer Council that urgent action is needed to defuse a looming will-making ‘time-bomb’ which is putting 27 million people in England and Wales at risk, have been applauded by a specialist will-writing company.
Collective Legal Solutions spokesman Alex Crate said this week: “The consequences of not having a will could be horrendous and yet many of the people who stand to lose the most have taken no steps whatever to protect themselves or their families. Our hope is that people will heed the message in the new Consumer Council report.”
The NCC pulls no punches in its conclusions. It says that four out of five parents who have not made a will are ‘gambling with their children’s future’ since the courts could be left to decide what happens to them if both parents were to die unexpectedly while unmarried couples are most at risk of losing property, personal possessions and cash if their partner were to die intestate. Only 27 per cent of those on low incomes have a will and only 12 per cent of people from black and minority ethnic groups.
Apathy is said to be the principal cause of inaction – though expert help is readily available through solicitors, special will-writing advisers and non-legal organisations by banks or charities. Handwritten wills on a pre-printed form are not recommended where personal circumstances are complicated or a business is involved.
Said Alex “We wholeheartedly endorse the NCC’s view that dying without a will can leave all sorts of headaches for those left behind and that government and business must act now before millions more people suffer.”
