From nurse to gas-elec safety inspection engineer was definitely a complete life change for David Ribano at the age of 42, but after five years he is certain that he made the right move. Fed up with the politics and red tape of the NHS “What was wrong? How long have I got?” he wanted to be more autonomous in his work.

As well as nursing, David had also done an apprenticeship as an electrician at the age of 16. “But I didn’t want work that involved taking up floorboards or climbing into lofts all day. And building sites are fine in summer but cold in winter. Browsing through the internet I found gas-elec, and thought that will do for me. I’ve been able to marry my people skills with my electrical skills.”

With some past experience of being self-employed, he also liked the security of a franchise. “It can be very hard work when you’re on your own, but with a franchise such as gas-elec, they can take some of the load off your shoulders – such as invoicing and payments. Now I can come in, download my work for the next day, fully scheduled all done for you. And the payments come in regularly every two weeks. This enables me to concentrate on doing more work.

“The work has been much what I expected, but perhaps more intense. I cover the Northampton area, perhaps I’m fortunate but I’m busy all the time. There’s a lot of work, people are ringing up all day, I’ve always got my earpiece in.

“My secret? Well I think you have to make your own business. It’s like nursing really, I like to look after my customers, make personal contact, remember to ask how their grannies or their children are, that sort of thing. You become part of an extended family. I’m called “our gas man”. I rather like that. There’s ups and downs like anything, but it’s been good for me.”
