A new scheme which will save post offices from closure has been launched by a UK business, Mail Boxes Etc. (UK) Ltd. (MBE). Gary Coyle, a Kent sub postmaster and founder of Postmasternet Ltd is working with MBE to drive this new initiative forward.
MBE centres will be set up in former post offices to handle post and parcels. They will also provide other popular services including those currently offered by the Post Office network such as foreign currency exchange, bill payment services and money transmission.
Mail Boxes Etc (MBE) already offers alternative postal services through its network of High Street centres across the UK. The new opportunity is a franchised concession which will enable post offices to stay in business and could also be adopted by independent retailers who want to add postal services to their ranges.
Chris Gillam, MBE’s Managing Director, said: “We are offering sub postmasters and convenience store owners a real opportunity to protect their livelihoods, serve their communities and to make excellent use of existing premises. It is vitally important to keep post office facilities open, especially those combined with shops which are the hub of many communities. A local post office is much more than a place for people to buy a stamp or pay a bill.”
Gary Coyle, himself a rural sub postmaster for twenty years, will spearhead the development. He is already well known and respected for his energetic campaigns to protect post offices and their services as well as setting up Postmasternet Ltd., the company that successfully courted big business to introduce new income streams for ailing post offices. His experience and knowledge will be invaluable as the driving force for the venture.
He commented: “I have worked very closely for some months with MBE to develop this franchised concession. Now we are confident that our proposition will appeal to sub postmasters, especially those who want to stay in their own area and are entrepreneurial. There are limitless opportunities, particularly in places with large numbers of customers operating small businesses and people working from home.”
The total investment will be in the region of £25,000, which will include full training and marketing support. Chris Gillam added: “We believe that our concession can be readily adopted by post offices and other small retailers. As full members of the British Franchise Association, we have the necessary credentials to demonstrate our commitment to ethical franchising. We have a long track record of successful franchising in the UK, with considerable practical experience, expertise and knowledge of the sector.”
