As UK Youth Unemployment tops the one million mark, Global Enterprise week and local entrepreneurs focus on starting conversations, raising awareness and connecting people to kick start the next generation of entrepreneurs and business people. Hawick is a traditional Scottish Border milltown, and the last few years has seen unemployment soar as major factories such as Pringle close local operations or outsource the manufacturing to the Far East. At one time, sales of its luxury garments in America meant Hawick was the UK's biggest per capita dollar earner. "I used to challenge my first-year pupils to come up with the names of 25 mills as a homework exercise, I knew I could do that because I knew there were at least 40 in the town. Now, I doubt if there's more than 10 left in Hawick, and most of them are a lot smaller than they used to be,” says Ron Smith, local councillor and Beki’s old deputy head at Hawick High School. The last time youth unemployment was this high was the year that Beki Scott was born. Beki recently returned to Hawick after university in order to be able to help out in her Grandparents company, however employment opportunities in Hawick are extremely limited, and there were no employment opportunities available in the town that let her earn some money whilst carrying on helping in her Grandparents business. Beki has always been very involved in enterprise, working in her Grandfather’s cattle tagging business, and so Beki took the plunge a few months ago to move into self employment, taking on the Borders franchise of Kids Bee Happy Sand Art. She received information and advice from the Local Borders Enterprise fund which helped her get her business off to a flying start and also a startup grant to assist financially. “Since starting my business PSYBT have been really supportive. Taking me out for coffee, calling regularly to see how I am getting on – I have never been treated this well by any boyfriend! Being my own boss is wonderful, never before have I been so keen to sit in front of my PC.
