Delia Butler (pictured below) is a Business Coach and owns an Ology franchise in the North West. She knows from personal experience that franchising is an ideal option for women. She says; “Franchising is great for women looking to start their own business because you get the flexibility of running your own business, setting your own agenda but with the support network to fill in the skill gaps so that you can get started quicker...”
Delia lives in High Peak with her husband and 3 children and began her business in May 2006. In this time, she has used her experience and know-how to help a number of businesses progress.
Delia’s background…
Delia’s successful career background is testament to her drive and enthusiasm to be successful. For nearly 20 years she worked with one of the Big 4 Accountancy firms in the UK reaching a Senior Management position. At the same time she was a non-executive Director for a leading national charity.
Franchising was the way forward for Delia…
The time came when Delia wanted to realise her full potential by running her own business. When considering her options Delia recognised that there were some benefits to franchising over starting her own company from scratch. Delia expresses her then concerns: “I had come from a very large corporate background where we had a full technical support system to help me do my job. I was used to a team environment and knew I would find it difficult to work completely on my own. Although I knew a lot about businesses and how they operate I had never been in a position of directly selling my services in the marketplace. Franchising was definitely the answer to these concerns as I would be retaining control of my own business, and the type of work and client I wanted to work with, whilst having a support structure and a very professional and strong brand.”
The Benefits of an Ology Franchise…
Delia explains; “The Directors of Ology have the philosophy that they want us to have a good work-life balance and to enjoy what we do – to be role models for our clients. They are very supportive and are constantly listening to the franchisees opinions as to how the franchise should develop, whilst being rigorous in maintaining the original principles that they set up the franchise with…”
Ology’s Support…
Ology’s approach to supporting their franchisees has helped Delia realise her dream of owning her own business. She says; “Support from Ology is available as and when required and I have regular contact with my Regional Director Richard Dickinson, who has both a mentoring and support role. We are targeted on activity levels rather than results, which is great for someone like me taking their first step in working for myself and developing my business.”
Delia’s Typical Day…
Delia’s day varies considerably, involving anything from breakfast meetings, working on projects for existing clients and preparing proposals for new ones as well as attending networking events. She has been invited to share her expertise as a speaker at a number of networking events in Manchester.
Delia’s Advice to You…
Don’t underestimate the hard work that is still required to set up your own business even within a franchise setting. The support you will get from Ology HQ is great and they understand that many working women do have commitments beyond their business (their family lives are important to them as well).
The training that Ology Business Coaches receive is unrivalled – particularly with the partnership with the Adler School of Professional Coaching in Canada. There is also plenty of training to ensure you are capable of managing the Diagnostic process - as long as you have had a reasonable level of business experience, either through running your own business or being in a senior position in corporate life, you will be able to do a great job. Women tend to underestimate their ability and skill level so be realistic and positive about what your skill gap is!
