Having been made redundant from my job in the City, I had been considering a change of direction and began to look into the possibility of self employment. It was an area to consider as I felt that over the years I had acquired some useful transferable skills. My research came across the idea of a franchise, something I had previously regarded as being at the lower end of the business market. But how wrong could I be. Franchisees are everywhere, and having spoken to various sources I also discovered that they had a very low failure rate amongst the established companies. It therefore became evident that the method of using a proven concept would be the least risky way of taking my first tentative steps into running a business.

To minimise overheads I wanted to work from home in partnership with my wife, Tracey, which is where The Original Poster Company came to our attention as a suitable business. We felt that their products were of a better quality, and offered a more unique brand than competitors within the greetings card market. The concept of sale and return without the need for hard selling also appealed to us, as did the fact that the local franchise was up for sale !!

When approached, OPC provided a response which was indicative of the professional way the company was run. Consequently we bought the business and haven’t looked back. There followed several days of excellent training, backed up by regular support and first class administration behind the scenes, which have given us the initial skills and confidence to start working within this industry. It also confirmed to us that we had made the right choice.

Although we have only been running the business for 9 months, during this short time OPC have regularly added new designs to their existing portfolio, and introduced several ranges of new cards to the market. The financial packages offered have allowed us to invest in these products by minimising the impact on our cashflow. The result being that our card sales have already increased by over 30%, through both the expansion of existing accounts and acquisition of new business. Our intention is to continue expanding and increase both the profitability and capital value of the business.

However, whilst future success is very much in our hands, it has been evident to us that OPC is not a company prepared to rest on its laurels. The appointment of new graphic designers, a systems manager, a national accounts manager and several business development managers since we joined is proof to us that the company is strengthening its position within a very competitive industry and in the long term that can only be good news for the franchisees.
